How to Install Synthetic Grass
If you want to save water and money for your home, synthetic grass installation is a highly effective way to do it. Let’s start with the
tools you’ll need.
Specialty Tools
For synthetic grass installation, you’ll need:
- 15 feet, or one role of seaming cloth
- A quart of seaming glue
- Landscape stakes
- Turf rake
- Hand tamper for outdoor applications
- Sprinkler caps, if required.
Common Tools
If you’re a DIYer, you likely already have most of these tools on hand:
- Utility knife
- Tape measure
- Hammer
- Shovel
- Yard rake
- Marking paint
- Wheelbarrow
- Garden hose
- Wide shop broom
Once you have your tools assembled, it’s time to move on to the actual installation.
-
Prepare the base. To allow for proper water drainage, most outdoor-based applications call for an aggregate base.
First, clear the areas where you’ll install your synthetic grass, making sure to remove roots and any superfluous natural grass.
Then place a four to six-inch layer of crushed aggregate in the shape and contour of your new lawn. Use your hand and a rake to
compress and level the surface.
-
Trim to size. Once you’ve prepared the base, lay down your SYNLawn synthetic grass and trim it to shape. If you’re
using more than one roll of artificial turf, be sure the grain of the grass fibres in each roll point in the same direction.
-
Glue seams together. For applications with two or more rolls, align the pieces edge-to-edge and place seaming cloth
down the joint length. Secure the seaming cloth by applying a consistent thickness of seaming adhesive to the cloth. After several
minutes, ease the two edges back together. Double-check the fit, and when satisfied, use anchor pins or galvanized nails around
the lawn’s perimeter to keep the synthetic grass flat and anchored to the base.
-
Groom the synthetic grass. Use the landscape rake or broom to brush and invigorate the fibres. Thoroughly
rinse the area with a hose.
-
Add infill. We recommend Envirofill infill for its anti-microbial properties that can prevent bacteria, mold, and
mildew from forming in your synthetic grass.
And there you have it! To keep your newly installed synthetic grass looking great and feeling soft, brush and rinse it on a regular basis.
